Sixty Years of Vibrio parahaemolyticus Research

چکیده
A severe foodborne disease outbreak late in 1950 in Osaka, Japan, led to 20 fatalities among 272 patients, who suffered from acute gastroenteritis, with symptoms that included severe abdominal pain, described by many as a “burning sensation in the stomach,” vomiting, and severe diarrhea. The onset of symptoms was very rapid, within 2 to 6 h in most cases, and autopsies revealed extensive damage to the stomach, other components of the gastrointestinal tract, and other internal organs. Local experts quickly ruled out chemical agents as the cause of this extraordinarily potent, foodborne illness. Experts soon identified the common food source for this outbreak—namely, a small, semidried fish, called shirasu. Although available shirasu samples were heavily laden with bacterial contaminants, microbiologist Tsunesaburo Fujino (1907–1992) of nearby Osaka University quickly excluded a series of well-known enteropathogens. However, he also grew frustrated when his early efforts to isolate the mysterious culprit proved unsuccessful.

متن کاملChemical Composition and Antimicrobial Effect of Five Essential Oils on Pathogenic and Non-Pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus
Background and Objectives: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is the causative agent of gastroenteritis due to consumption of contaminated seafood. The aim of the present study was to determine the chemical composition of Essential Oils (EOs) of five plants (Artemisia absinthium, Zataria multiflora Boiss., Pulicaria gnaphalodes, Trachyspermum ammi and Cuminum cyminum) and to evaluate their antimicrobial a...
متن کاملDetermination of molecular phylogenetics of Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains by multilocus sequence typing.
Vibrio parahaemolyticus is an important human pathogen whose transmission is associated with the consumption of contaminated seafood. There is a growing public health concern due to the emergence of a pandemic strain causing severe outbreaks worldwide. Many questions remain unanswered regarding the evolution and population structure of V. parahaemolyticus. In this work, we describe a multilocus...
متن کاملQuantification of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio cholerae in French Mediterranean coastal lagoons.
Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio cholerae are human pathogens. Little is known about these Vibrio spp. in the coastal lagoons of France. The purpose of this study was to investigate their incidence in water, shellfish and sediment of three French Mediterranean coastal lagoons using the most probable number-polymerase chain reaction (MPN-PCR). In summer, the total number of ...
